The extent to which artists should have the right to absolute freedom of artistic expression and creativity is a debate which polarizes opinion. Although artists bring a lot of positive development in the world from their creative imagination and ideas, I feel that some of their artworks must be censored by the government.

da-vinciIt  is irrefutable that through the visionary ideas of some artists, a myriad of inventions have been produced. One excellent example is the discovery of airplane, which was rooted from the sketches of flying machines made by Leonardo da Vinci, a renowned Italian artist. During his time, a tremendous number of people did not believe that a human can fly and they thought that it was just a figment of Leonardo’s imagination. However, due to his powerful thinking, he proved that a human can fly through flying machines. This clearly elucidates how important the artworks of artists in the world. Surely, more and more discoveries will be created on condition that their freedom of expression is exercised.

On the other hand, there are a plethora of reasons why some of the artworks of artists must be restricted by the government. First and foremost, there are countless paintings, sculptures and films that are considered offensive, immoral, and deemed unholy by many people. For instance, Gustave Courbet’s painting called “The Origin of The World”, which shows a close – up portrait of woman’s genitalia. This sexually explicit work of art can be seen as a degrading to women and to a majority of catholic faith. Hence, art censorship is vitally important to filter this kind of masterpiece.

Moreover, children in particular are immensely affected by the obscene work of art as well. Many a time, egregious languages are heard from songs produced by famous artists. Thus, imitating the lyrics of the songs is extremely possible as youngsters can be easily influenced by singers and other musicians.

In conclusion, though artists must be given the privilege to express their thoughts and ideas, I believe to some degree that art censorship should be imposed by the government in order to regulate the moral and political life of the population.
